on the Sri Lanka-United States Partnership Dialogue

November 6, 2017

Sharing a commitment to democracy, rule of law, and the prosperity and well-being of our peoples, Sri Lanka and the United States convened the second Partnership Dialogue on November 6, 2017, in Colombo, Sri Lanka.  The meeting was led by Sri Lanka Foreign Secretary Prasad Kariyawasam and U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon.  The Partnership Dialogue demonstrates the consolidation of cooperation between the United States and Sri Lanka, and serves to further strengthen and enhance bilateral relations in the widest sense, through regular and structured engagement.

Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana meets Vice Premier of China

Hon. Tilak Marapana, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is on an official visit to China to attend the celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 65th Anniversary of economic relations between Sri Lanka and China, met with Chinese Vice Premier H.E. Wang Yan on 1st November 2017 in Beijing.

Marshall Legacy Institute honours Sri Lanka Army Mine Detection Dog Team for the Second Consecutive Year

A Mine Detection Dog (MDD) Team from the Sri Lanka Army was honoured by the U.S.-based Marshall Legacy Institute (MLI) at its 20th Anniversary Clearing the Path Gala in Washington D.C on October 24. This is the second consecutive year the honour has been bestowed on a Sri Lankan mine detection dog team.

Foreign Minister Marapana attends IORA Council of Ministers’ Meeting in Durban, South Africa

Minister of Foreign Affairs Tilak Marapana attended the Seventeenth Council of Ministers’ Meeting (COM) of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in Durban, South Africa, on 18 October 2017.

Consular Division wins Two Awards at the 19th National Best Quality ICT Awards

The Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was awarded the Public Sector Most Outstanding ICT Achievement Award and the Gold Award in the Government and Public Sector Category at the 19th National Best Quality ICT Awards held at the Hotel Taj Samudra on 06th October 2017.

Visit by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non-Recurrence

At the invitation of the Government of Sri Lanka, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion of Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non-Recurrence, Mr. Pablo de Greiff is currently on an official country visit to the country from 10 – 23 October 2017.

Visiting UK Minister for Asia and Pacific reaffirmed support for Sri Lanka’s development and reconciliation programmes

The Under Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Minister for Asia and Pacific of the United Kingdom, Hon. Mark Field, on his first official visit to Sri Lanka since assuming the portfolio, met with Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Tilak Marapana yesterday (5 October 2017) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana visits Bosnia and Herzegovina

Minister of Foreign Affairs Tilak Marapana paid an official working visit to the Republic of Bosnia & Herzegovina from 28th to 30th September 2017 on an invitation extended by its Government.

Hon. Vasantha Senanayake, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Visits Kushinagar Pilgrims sites.

The State Minister of Foreign Affairs Vasantha Senanayake visited India from 23-25th September 2017. He visited Kushinagar Pilgrim site on 24th September 2017. The Uttar Pradesh Government made arrangements to receive the state Minister on arrival at the Gorakpur Airport, and he was received by Group Captain Rajath Thiyagi, Sub Divisional Magistrate of Gorakpur at the Gorakpur Airport. In Kushinagar, he was received by Sub Divisional Magistrate of Kushinagar, Mr. Jayaprakash Shukla and was accorded a Police guard of honour. 

In Kushinagar, State Minister Senanayake had discussions with Ven H. Assaji Thero, Chief Monk of the Sri Lanka- Japan Buddhist Center on the maintainance of the monuments and the temple, and on the facilities provided to the Buddhist pilgrims. The state Minister of Foreign Affairs also paid homepage to the sacred sites in Kushinagar.
